Ann Atchinson Wins Award
In Beta Journalism Contest
   Ann Atchinson, Southeast chapter of Beta Club Member, was awarded second place in a student writing contest sponsored by the Beta Journal, monthly magazine of national Beta members.
   Ann's poem, "High on a Hillside," was the prize winning article
   Being on the Tower staff last year, a member of Quill and Scroll, and literary editor of the Crusader this year have proved Ann's exceptional writing ability.
 
 
 
 
 
BOOKS ON HUMAN RELATIONS were reviewed by four finalists in the Mnookin-Brown post human relations contest. The first prize, $400, was awarded to Miss Ann Atchinson, 16,of 2234 East Seventy-seventh street terrace, Southeast high school (seated left) who is holding one of the certificates each participant received

College Scholarships
Awarded Graduates
   Seniors this year have been awarded many college scholarships. Most of these awards can be renewed from year to year if high scholarship is maintained.
   Ann Atchinson and Paul Hocott received scholarships for one year by curators awards. Ann was also awarded a $400 Mnookin-Brown scholarship for the college of her choice.
   The Victor Wilson scholarship to KCU was given to Roger Barnes.
   Ronnie Belzer has been awarded the Lieberman Scholarship to Junior College.
   A Baylor University honor scholarship was received by Elizabeth Crosby.
   Louis Eckstein received the Harding College freshman scholarship.
   John Griffith and Gary Walton both received valuable Navy ROTC awards, good for five years.
   Mona Halliburton was awarded the Missouri Valley Honor Scholarship for one year.
   David Morton received two scholarships good for one year each. The William Jewell and Sears Roebuck and Co. scholarships were awarded him.
   Central Missouri state college scholarships were received by Carolyn Needles and Carol Von Demfange.
   Darlene Stanley was given a Baker University achievement scholarship for one year.
   Joleen Watts received the Margaret Kemp Memorial Award for one year.

   The Beta dance and banquet at the YMCA was a big success. Those seen dancing to the music were: Shirley Fenton and Tom Cowling, Sue Davidson and Bob Hillis, Ann Atchinson and Bob Hodges, Carol Means and Jim Bloss, Phyllis Graf and Randall Smithmier, Mona Halliburton and Earl Craw-ford, Barbara Brackney and Lynn Alexander, and Beth Fowler and Shannon Jones

Hill to Head Crusader;
Eckstein, Eichman Aids
At the beginning of the new school year our Crusader Staff promptly began work. Mr. Tira supervisor, chose the staff: Danny Hill, editor, Louis Eckstein and Don Eichman, assistant co-editors; Mary Louise Erickson, secretary and business manager; Ann Atchinson, literary editor; Lois Garner and Darlene Stanley, art editors; Oletha Ludwig, senior editor; Leann Riggs, junior editor; Shirley Fenton, sophomore editor; Carol Gain, freshman editor, Jane Seitz, eight grade editor; Carol Hamarstrom, clubs and activities; Phyllis Graf, athletics. With this staff, we can be looking forward to an outstanding Crusader in '54.

Six New Girls Selected
For Southeast A.A.U.W.
The A.A.U.W. girls here at Southeast have taken in six new members, bringing the total membership up to eleven. They are Elizabeth Crosby, and Joleen Watts, seniors; Betty Hailey, a junior; and Marnell Higley, Patsy Thomas and Joan Klamm, sophomores. The other members are Ann Atchinson, Eleanor Kerr, Oletha Ludwig, seniors, and Barbara Brackney, Peggy Dorsey, juniors. The girls are sponsored by Mrs. Harry Brinton.
   A.A.U.W., which is an abbreviation for American Association of University Women, is composed of Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors showing superior scholastic ability.

   Recently a surprise (hah) party was thrown for Danny Hill. Those attending were: Art Hill, Gary Walton, Betty Nelson, Don Masoner, Ralph Mills, Jackie Greer, Ann Atchinson, Bob Hodges (Paseo '53), Margie Grace, (J.C.), and a bunch of Paseo-ites.
